FAH Hosts Conference on Lebanon’s Offshore Oil & Gas Protection Framework

On October 15, 2025, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) at AUT organized a high-level conference titled “Lebanese Offshore Oil & Gas Protection Framework”, held at the Issam Fares Auditorium on the Halat campus. The event featured a keynote presentation by Brigadier General Dr. George Darazi, an expert in political science, security studies, and international relations, with over 30 years of distinguished service in the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).

The conference served as a critical platform to discuss the growing security challenges facing Lebanon’s offshore oil and gas installations. In light of rising regional tensions and threats such as terrorism, sabotage, and asymmetric warfare, Dr. Darazi emphasized the urgent need to strengthen both legal and operational frameworks to ensure the protection of these strategic assets.

While Lebanon has already established legal measures to safeguard its offshore resources, Dr. Darazi highlighted existing gaps that require immediate attention. He proposed a range of practical and innovative solutions, including enhanced surveillance systems, the extension of maritime safety zones, and increased international cooperation.

Drawing on his deep expertise in maritime security, energy geopolitics, and international law—particularly in the context of the Eastern Mediterranean—Dr. Darazi offered valuable insights into how Lebanon can better protect its energy future. His analysis underscored the importance of a coordinated national strategy that aligns legal, technical, and diplomatic efforts to secure the country’s offshore wealth.

The conference was a timely and thought-provoking contribution to national dialogue on energy security and maritime sovereignty, and it reinforced the pivotal role of academic institutions in shaping public policy and strategic planning.

He received a trophy in recognition of his achievements from the President, Dr. Mokbel.
