Objectives
The Writing
Assistance Center (WAC) is a
supplemental tutoring program offered by the
English Department and designed to assist
students with ANY writing assignment. The
WAC was established to help all the campus
students strengthen their writing abilities
and achieve a better standard of English by
continuing to improve their English language
skills even though they no longer have
English classes.
How it works
At the Writing Center, we
work one-on-one with students of all levels
in a supportive setting. We provide students
with feedback on their work and help them
develop strategies for approaching future
writing tasks. Our aim is to help students
acquire the skills to develop and polish
their writing themselves. Here’s some of
what we offer:
-
We are a FREE and
confidential service for students,
staff, and faculty at AUT.
-
We’re open from
Monday to Friday in the E-building
(rooms E109, E110, E111). The
schedules of the instructors are posted
on the doors.
-
We support students at
any stage of the writing process and we
offer guidance in:
- exploring
ideas
- outlining
- drafting
- revising
- editing
- writing
paragraphs and topic sentences
- writing
thesis statements
- avoiding
plagiarism
- using
transitions
- citing
sources
- using
evidence
- writing
essays, reports, book reviews and research
papers
- preparing
oral presentations
- conducting
interviews
- improving
grammatical and sentence structures
-
We provide a positive
learning experience facilitated by
knowledgeable writing instructors.
-
We work with students on
writing from any class—not just English.
-
We assist with academic
writing assignments, as well as
extra-curricular writing (resumes,
application, recommendation,
resignation, appreciation letters
etc.).
-
We offer flexible hours.

Our policy on
proofreading is that we will not, under any
circumstances, be writing for the students,
rather we will be assisting them by pointing
out their mistakes, but the correcting will
be done by the students.
We do not proofread
students’ papers. That is, if the students
want to work in their tutorial on correcting
grammatical errors in their writing, an
instructor will not find and correct those
errors for them. Instead, the instructor
will go through the regular process with
them, first listening to their concerns,
then reading their paper, and talking with
them about the kinds of grammatical errors
they’re committing. Then, with the
instructor’s help, they can learn how to
avoid or correct these mistakes on their
own.
We have adopted this policy
at the Writing Assistance Center at AUT
because we see the writing support we
provide as part of the University’s
educational mission. We believe that we can
best meet our goal of helping students to
become better writers not by simply
correcting grammatical errors for students,
but instead by helping them strengthen their
skills in all aspects of the writing
process, including proofreading.
Furthermore, we can’t promise that a student
who has had a tutorial at the center will
hand in a paper completely free of
grammatical errors even if the tutorial
concentrated on grammatical problems, since
the work of proofreading the paper is
ultimately the student’s responsibility.
Instructors
will not accept "drop off"
papers/assignments. |
