Commencement 2011

cakeOver 1300 people attended the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2009-10 and the Class of 2010-11 that took place on September 6 at Edde Sands Jbeil.

A panel of distinguished guests also attended including SUNY Empire State College President Alan Davis, the director of the LLM program at University of London International Programmes Dr James Busuttil, and the special representative of Université de Toulouse, Dr Hiam Mouannes.

The official Lebanon was very well represented too. The director general of the Ministry of Education, Fadi Yarak, represented all of the President of the Republic, the President of the Parliament and the Prime Minister. Over 14 members of Parliament attended alongside representatives for the Ministry of Energy and Water, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Telecommunications. The Maronite Patriarch Bishara Rahi delegated Mgr Joseph Moawad and the Commander in Chief of the Lebanese Army sent Colonel Pascal Abou Elias while Me Salima Rifi represented the director general of the Internal Security Forces Gen Ashraf Rifi.

Over 140 other people represented  schools, universities, cultural centers, municipalities, and other instances.

200 students received their degrees from the hands of AUT President Ghada Hinain and 32 received theirs from the President of SUNY Empire State College President Alan Davis as they graduated from the joint program both universities offer in Lebanon at AUT.

Words were said by each President and by the representative of Université de Toulouse. Student speakers Falak Khodr and Gerard Mounayar addressed the audience on behalf of graduates.

Then the Kuwait- born business woman Safa Al Hashem received a PhD Honoris Causa from AUT for the important contribution to the development of Arab women and for her outstanding business achievements as well as for her humanitarian action for Arab underprivileged children. Ms Al Hashem (now Dr Al Hashem) is also CEO of Consulting Advantage, a company specialized in investment banking.

After Dr Al Hashem’s address, came the time for a performance by Sicilian tenor Maestro Tino Favazza  who sang wonderful opera arias for the audience and a great adaptation of Fayrouz’s famous Aatini Al Nay Wa Ghanni ended his brilliant performance.

The ceremony was proclaimed ended after an impressive show of fireworks. A gala dinner for the 1300 guests then followed.
