Director
of Ozone Unit at the Ministry of
Environment speaks at AUT
After
being exposed to the effects of global
warming through the documentary “An
Inconvenient Truth” and the diseases
that result from climate change through
a presentation by Dr. Jean-Claude Honein,
AUT students had the chance to learn
about the Ozone layer and the effects of
the Ozone Hole through another
theme-related presentation given by Mr.
Mazen Hussein—the director of the
National Ozone Unit in the Ministry of
Environment implemented by the UNDP—on
Thursday, April 24 at 11:30.
Besides
the scientific side of the topic, Mr.
Hussein gave some practical information
to the students. He also talked about
the Montreal Protocol, how it is
implemented in factories throughout
Lebanon, and the activities that the
Ministry of Environment and the UNDP are
doing in respect to limiting
ozone-harmful gas emissions by different
industries.
Students inquired about how to be ozone
friendly and how to protect themselves
from UVA and UVB during the Q and A
session that followed the presentation.
Mr.
Hussein congratulated the English
Department at AUT for taking the lead of
raising the students’ awareness about
such vital topics which might seem
remotely connected to the English
language but are an essential part of
our every day life.

AUT Hosts US Cultural Attache |

AUT received the Cultural Attache at the US
Embassy in Beirut, Richard Michaels, on
April 15 to address students on
opportunities of study in the US. Speaking
to an audience of over 80 students Michaels
pointed to the characteristics of the
educational system and teaching methods of
US universities that favor critical thinking
and analysis as opposed to outdated
traditional methods of learning and
encouraged students to take advantage of
exchange opportunities that AUT offers its
students with Oklahoma University, the
University of Dayton, State University of
New York and Davenport University.
Michaels, of Lebanese origin, also informed
the audience of the various scholarships
offered through the embassy and Amideast for
undergraduate and graduate studies and
provided useful advice on the issue of
student visas.
Information and applications for The
Fullbright scholarships for Master studies
in the US were available on campus as a team
of Amideast met with AUT students that same
day.
The presentation was an initiative taken by

AUT Students at EGAR meeting in Amman |
| |
Aut has been invited by Evian Group Arab
Region, a gathering of prominent
business, government and opinion leaders
aiming to ensure the great
competitiveness of the Arab region and
facilitate its integration in the global
economy, to send five students to
participate in its third meeting held in
Amman April 6 to 9.
Cynthia Chahine, Remy Fakhry, Dona
Ghadieh, Sara Moussally and Raed Sadek
left for Amman to interact with the
assembly of the brightest Arab youth
coming once a year to conceive and trade
ideas and experiences.
AUT was selected among the Lebanese
universities, “as one of the most
reputable universities in Lebanon for
its world-class faculty and distinct
academic programs”. “AUT students are
expected to provide not only the gamut
of Arab cultural heritage and tradition
but also the advantageous sides of
Western education and alternative
viewpoints” according to the EGAR
invitation text.
Of her experience, Sara says, “it was my
honor to meet Tala Abu-Ghazaleh and Jean
-Pierre Lehamann, who showed us how we
as youth could play an important role in
our society and culture and hoped that
this meeting will bring change in the
Arab world and unite us and our efforts.
After hearing what Tala abu-Ghazaleh and
Jean -Pierre Lehamann had to say.”
Students then were divided into 5 round
tables in presence of Dr Lama Al
Sulaiman ( board member Jeddah Chamber
of Commerce ), Ms Zinat Ahmad ( founding
member of MSA and the Suzanne Mubarak
Movement for Peace ), Mr Mohamed el
Dahshan (UNDP consultant ) and discussed
problems regarding employment, gender
inequality , public and private sector.
A plenary meeting was then held and
reports from roundtables and discussion
groups were handed. AUT’s Sara Moussally
was elected to represent her group and
present to the other roundtable teams
and to Jean-Pierre Lehmann the results
of her team work.
A great
experience for our students!

AUT Student Wins Gibran Tueni Award 2008 |
|
|
AUT has learned with great pride that a
student of Communication, Tania Karkafe,
has
been
selected as one of the recipients of the
Gibran Tueni Award for 2008.
The Award committee had contacted the
Office of External Relations to supply
names and files of candidates that fit
the criteria for the award and five
files were submitted in September 2007
after consulting with relevant faculty
and investigation of family situations.
The members of the committee then did
their own selection according to
academic and other criteria and Tania
was selected. Over 160 candidates from
all universities in Lebanon were in line
for this award. Four other students from
four other universities have also won
the award with our student.
The Award ceremony took place on Friday,
April 18 at 4 pm at the Emile Lahoud
Cultural Center in Antelias and the AUT
community was mobilized to cheer Tania.
This yet another student success is the
success of all the AUT community.

Auto Show at AUT |

In its efforts to promote road safety, AUT
Student Council invited car racing champion
Abdo Feghali to speak of safe driving on
March 27. After Feghali demonstrated skills
in driving on the AUT parking lots he showed
the difference between tuned up engines for
race cars and the regular engines to point
to students that racing cars are unsafe to
drive on regular roads. He insisted that
those who love speed should drive on special
car race circuits not open to the general
public. He answered questions by students on
his experience and said his worse car race
experience was in the Finland Rally where he
experienced all sorts of mechanical
problems.
The Office of Students Affairs supported
this initiative in its campaign to promote
safe driving which started with a
presentation early March by Kunhadi
Organization.

Road Safety Conference at AUT |
| |
The founders of Kunhadi Organization
presented facts about road accidents
casualties in Lebanon and the world and
suggested means of action to reduce such
fatalities to an audience of 300 students
from AUT and from schools of the Byblos area
invited by AUT’s Office of External
Relations.
Lena Gebran, a co-founder of Kunhadi, after
she lost her son in a car accident in April
2006, started by giving an account of how
the fatal accident happened and told a moved
audience that they can spare suffering to
their parents and relatives as a movie
showed her late son major steps in life.
Then Mazen Abou Chahla spoke of his accident
that had him sit in a wheelchair with a
total paralysis of his left side of the
body. Mazen was ejected from his car as he
was not wearing a seat belt and suffered
severe brain damage.
Fadi Gebran then gave figures about the
numbers of deaths resulting from car crashes
and the reasons for such deaths. He went on
to specify his organization has taken on the
role of increasing awareness among the
Lebanese young population leaving other
lines of actions such as road improvement,
emergency care improvement and traffic laws
enforcement to the relevant authorities. A
movie was shown to prove the importance of
seat belts and a campaign is under way to
promote the use of this safety device.
The audience was later invited to test the
“seat belt convincer” which is used by
Kunhadi to demonstrate the violence of the
collision of a car moving at only 12km/hr.
This conference initiates a series of
activities by AUT designed to increase
awareness against unsafe driving
