Former Minister of Finance and Economy Lectures at AUT

Reforming the State or Repositioning the Nation was the topic developed by Damianos Kattar, former minister of finance and economy at AUT on March 6, 2007. Kattar was speaking to an audience made up of AUT senior Business students, AUT faculty and staff.

According to Kattar, repositioning the nation according to its comparative advantages and because of the triangle of prosperity formed by emerging Africa, wealthy Arab Gulf and stable Europe should be a priority. The Lebanese educated young people can take advantage of this opportunity to start businesses catering for the needs of the area especially in food technology, software design and innovative marketing. He gave as an example the case of the potato seed cultivation as opposed to growing potatoes, the latter having no competitive advantage for Lebanon in view of the competition in Syria and Egypt, the former being a strong advantage for the country.

He also assured that coding in the software industry was not an area where the Lebanese can compete against the Indians but computer architecture was.

Kattar went on to enumerate the areas of national wealth, which were many despite the infrastructural damage caused by the latest Israeli aggression and maintained that the Lebanese youth should actively seek to work in the Gulf or Lebanon rather than emigrating.

He deplored the absence of financing other than commercial banking. “Seed money and venture capital are still missing and this causes many entrepreneurs to start up businesses elsewhere instead”. He also advocates the establishment of many free zones in Lebanon to help graduates and investors start business in the country.

Kattar was invited by the department of External Relations
