MBA in Tourism Management Launched |

TThe first cohort enrolled in the MBA in
Tourism Management offered together with
Institut Universitaire Kurt Bosch of
Switzerland completed the first module
through an intensive residency at Le Royal
Hotel from May 17 to 20. The first module
was Growth-Oriented Tourism Policy and was
taught by Nikos Mistriotis, the coordinator
of the program of IUKB in Athens. A historic
perspective of tourism was introduced and
then modern tourism growth factors were
studied in depth. Participants worked on
case studies and presentations involving new
realities and new horizons as established by
the World Tourism Organization.
The next module, Tourism Marketing
Management, will be held June 7 to 9. For

Regionalization of Lebanese Banks |

Business students had the opportunity to
know more about the current expansion
started by Lebanese banks into the Arab
region by attending a special lecture by
former vice-president of the Central Bank,
Harout Samuelian on Friday June 1st at 11 am
in Halat.
The guest provided details on the two means
of expansion currently used by Lebanese
banks: implantation of branches and
extending loans across the national borders.
Mr Samuelian was invited by AUT Finance Club.

AUT students had the chance to interact
with representatives of 19 companies
that came on campus in Halat to propose
employment both full-time and part-time
to students. The weather conditions made
it imperative to move from the outdoors
to the Agora Tunnel but did not affect
the organization of the Fair. Over 600
applications were submitted to company
representatives. Microsoft was also part
of the event as a special presentation
was held to introduce Vista and MS
Office 2007.

The AUT community was able to learn more
about the pros and cons of low-calorie diets
as medical doctor and nutritionist Dr
Antoine Saliba provided suitable information
and presented alternatives to such diets.

Wine tasting at AUT |

At the initiative of the Hospitality Management
department, AUT hosted Paul Atallah, well known
sommelier and currently banqueting manager at
Edde Sands to initiate students to wine tasting.
The guest came on May 15 and introduced students
to the different techniques used in wine
tasting.

International Investment: The China Fund |

At the initiative of Dr Robert Saleeby from
the Department of Finance at the School of
Business, AUT hosted a team from SGBL to
speak about international investment
opportunities made possible through SGBL’s
China Fund which invests in Chinese
companies’ stock market and is open for more
investors.
SGBL representatives provided details about
this form of long-term international
investment on Monday May 14 at 12:30 pm in
the Auditorium in front of an audience made
up of students and staff.

Economic Growth and Investment |

scope of the guest lecture
series for the students of Seminars in
Business, AUT’s External Relations
invited senior economist Dr Elie Yashui
to speak on the Lebanese economy in a
presentation he chose to title A Strong
State Implies a Strong Economy.
The presentation took place on Friday,
May 4 at 12:15 pm at the Auditorium in
AUT Halat.
Dr Yashui exposed his arguments on how
to achieve economic growth and detailed
causes for the current weakness of the
country’s economy. He blamed past
governments for failing to boost
investments adopting instead a currency
stabilization policy and high interest
rates. Dr Yashui also stated that the
cost of production has risen so much as
to impair seriously Lebanon’s export
industry and said the remittances from
abroad were the main counterbalancing
for the deficit in the trade balance.

Hotel Management Table Setting Exhibition |

Students enrolled in the Hotel Management
course Food and Beverage Service held a
4-day exhibition of table setting. Four
groups came up with four table settings and
design including menu development. One
formal dining table, 2 Valentine dinner
tables and one baptism celebration lunch
table were on display at Crystal Room from
April 23 to 26 for all students to visit.
Banquet managers from Le Royal Hotel, Edde
Sands and La Voile Bleue were invited to
offer suggestions.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People |

An introduction to this very popular workshop will be given at AUT on April 20 at 12:15 pm by Raja Haddad, CEO of Starmanship and representative of Steven Covey, the author of the famed 7 Habits series.
The presentation addresses students enrolled in the Seminars in Business courses but is open to all faculty, staff and students who wish to know more about life improvement through the 7 Habits.

It was hot and humid for the AUT teams of mini soccer and basket ball in Egypt where they battled against 15 teams from Egypt in basket ball and 11 teams in mini soccer at the initiative of the Cairo-based Dakhilia team from April 4 to 14.
The AUT teams showed their best against seasoned professional teams like Al Zouhour, Sayd, Al Moassassa Al Ommalia, Al Sharkia and other Egyptian teams. Mohammad Radwan and Fadi Kabbara stood out and were recognized for their skills at the end of the basket ball tournament.
In mini soccer, Omar Abdul Aziz led the AUT team with gusto and got recognized as well.
The participation in this tournament comes as a result of the policy to improve athletics and sports activities at AUT. The teams were accompanied by coach and students activities coordinator Dany Hreiki

share
in
the
All
College
Conference
2007
held
March
27-30
in
Saratoga
Springs,
NY.
Marcel
Hinain,
director
of
external
relations
at
AUT
presented
the
history
of
the
Lebanon
Residency
Program,
the
joint
program
run
by
ESC
and
AUT
in
Lebanon.
In
his
presentation,
Mr.
Hinain
pointed
that
the
joint
program
was
10
years
old
having
started
in
March
1997
and
went
on
to
detail
the
different
phases
it
undertook.
The
audience
was
made
up
of
ESC
faculty
who
are
currently
teaching
in
the
LRP
or
who
have
taught
in
the
past
as
well
as
faculty
interested
to
know
more
about
the
program,
considered
the
largest
among
ESC
International
Programs.
During
his
visit,
Mr.
Hinain
also
met
with
Empire
State
College
President
and
Vice
President
for
Academic
Affairs
to
discuss
issues
relevant
to
the
joint
program
and
means
to
develop
the
relationships
with
the
College.

Islamic Banking Presentation |

A lecture on Islamic Banking addressing the senior students of Business Administration was given at AUT Halat on April 17 at 11 am by the CEO of the Arab Finance House, Dr. Fouad Matraji.
The conference highlighted Islamic banking characteristics and the differences with other forms of banking. Dr Matraji pointed to the spread of Islamic banks in non-Islamic countries such as the UK and to the emerging ethical funds in the US. Students and guests had a chance to ask the speaker about the different types of investments the Arab Finance House is currently into and the type of customers it is seeking.
The presentation was part of the series of lectures for the students enrolled in the Business Seminars course but AUT extended the invitation to key social and economic figures of the Byblos area and it welcomed the municipality presidents of Fidar and Halat, the president of the Byblos Cultural Council, school principals and business people of the area. |
