Poll
Search Results at Tripoli Book Fair |
|
|
The Tripoli Book Fair held at
Rasheed Karame Fair grounds was
the venue for a presentation by
Dr Imad Salameh of the results
of a poll conducted by AUT
students under his supervision.
Dr Salameh, director of the
Center for Urban Studies at AUT
wanted to poll the Lebanese
about their perceptions of
national issues like
privatization, national
priorities, the relations of
Lebanon with other states and
administrative reforms according
to confessional belongings. The
poll revealed the differences
and similarities of opinion
around those issues between the
different components of the
Lebanese society: Christians,
Sunnis, Shiites and Druze. The
poll results were published over
a month ago in Al Balad
newspaper and the Tripoli
presentation on May 4 in front
of over 200 people coming from
the North community (educational
figures, politicians, civil and
religious authorities, students
and fair visitors) helped remind
the Lebanese of the necessity to
continue national dialogue.

Faculty
Research Exchange at AUT |
|
|
Faculty members of AUT and others from
the visiting team from State University
of New York Empire State College met on
February 20 at AUT to exchange results
of research done by both universities.
After a word of welcome by Marcel
Hinain, director of External Relations
and organizer of this meeting, the
director of graduate studies Jean-Claude
Abi Saab started with an expose of the
business trends in the Gulf area and the
needs in university graduates. According
to this study most demand on business
graduates is in the areas of marketing,
sales and hospitality management.
Companies seek people that have not only
university qualifications but also the
right personality. Mr Abi Saab gave an
idea on the size of investments in the
hospitality area. He then moved to
explaining how the business curriculum
at AUT fits the needs of employers on a
course composition side and also on a
student profile side. Courses that
tackle globalization effects being part
of university requirements at AUT and a
curriculum constantly updated with the
contribution of business leaders are
seen to be the best preparation for
success in this part of the world.
Later it was Judi Gerardi’s turn to
expose the results of her research about
learners coming from Lebanon and
studying with SUNY Empire State College.
According to the samples of rationales
collected over the years from Lebanese
students, the main reason stated as
behind the students’ success was the
family contribution (73%). Another
important factor was the personal
motivation. One aspect to be noted in
this research was also the immediate
plans of graduates: find employment
outside of Lebanon.
Next it was the turn of the dean of
Computer Science and Engineering at AUT,
Dr Walid Saba, to speak on the current
research using Artificial Intelligence
undertaken at AUT. The research project
called Digital Agora aims at rendering
research for documents become smarter
using language processing and changing
the base of search from keywords to
subjects. Applications are found in the
Internet search engines and in the
document management systems. Dr Saba
said a prototype was being developed and
results exposed to the public before the
summer 2006.
Last it was AUT’s Dr Imad Salameh’s turn
to expose the results of his poll done
by AUT students aiming at showing how
different communities in Lebanon
prioritize issues and how they value
public services. The study included
opinions on privatization, corruption,
electoral law, public sector management
and other topics that are very relevant
in today’s political life in Lebanon.
The meeting ended with a commitment to
meet again in July with more exchange on
a faculty level.
