Faculty Development

Last year, university faculty from a variety of disciplines,  academic administrators, TA’s, and GA’s from throughout the Arab world attended the 1st  Annual Arab World Faculty Development Conference that was held in Kfarzebian, Lebanon on June 13-14, 2005. The two-day training conference focused on the paradigm shift from teaching to learning in higher education, whereby educators become producers of learning outcomes rather than providers of teaching. Participants from Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, the U.A.E., KSA, Bahrain, Mascat Oman, and Kuwait attended workshops on re-designing their courses and coursework.

This year, and as the above theme title indicates, the 2nd Annual Arab World Faculty Development Conference 2007 will first raise the case for adopting higher education teaching strategies that have proven to be more effective--and leading to more significant student learning outcomes, than the ubiquitous “lecture-class discussion-study-hard-at-home” teaching strategy.

AUT Students Take Part in Microsoft Finals

August 7 to 13, 2006 saw the best university brains in software development in the world compete in New Delhi, India for the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2006 finals. AUT was represented by Eddy Touma and Romeo Issa, both undergraduate students in Computer Science. Romeo and Eddy had qualified for the Lebanon chapter after competing against other universities in Lebanon and had also qualified in the East Mediterranean competition. 60000 participated in this event, only 41 teams made it to India. In New Delhi they met with competitors from the US, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Brazil, European countries most of them doing their masters or PhD studies.

The program Eddy and Romeo developed, called ie-diet, is a total innovation that helps nutritionists develop and modify diets for their patients with maximum food variety and no error in a minimum time frame. Also, using the web based services or pocket pc application, it gives patients control over their diet with the ability to choose any food item(s) they desire while keeping a well balanced diet. Another innovation was the “Fix my mess” service that fixes the patients mess in case he couldn’t follow the diet for a period of time. The project has a deep background in Artificial intelligence, Data knowledge engineering, Software engineering, Data base design...

Of his experience there, Romeo Issa says,” It’s been quite a challenge to match up with candidates doing their PhDs in Computer Science and discover that our program was in every bit competitive if not better in terms of software engineering”. Eddy Touma says, ”Our team was among the most popular and our program gained the support of most participants as it is solidly based on software engineering for a very useful application: diets”.

The experience for the two AUT students was invaluable and all the AUT community is proud of their achievements. A recognition ceremony was help prior to their departure to India and another one is in the making.
