Math for Business Placement Exam

The AUT Math Placement Exam for Business is composed of two parts (Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes).
- Part I (20 questions 3 points = 60 points) covers basic mathematical concepts.
- Part II (10 questions 4 points = 40 points) covers more advanced mathematical concepts. Total score is 100 points

Placement in Math courses is as follows:
- If a student scores below 40/100, he\she will have to take Basic Math (MAT 001)
- If a student scores 40 or more points on “Part I” then:
• If total grade is between 40 and 70 points student is placed in College Algebra (MAT 100)
• If total grade is higher than 70 points student is placed in Calculus and Applied Math for Business (MAT 221)
Please note that there will be a penalty for wrong answers on the placement exam: for every wrong answer one point is deducted from the total grade.

Math for Science Placement Exam

The AUT Math Placement Exam for Science is composed of three parts (Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes).
- Part I (10 questions 10 points = 100 points) covers basic mathematical concepts for science majors.
- Part II (10 questions 10 points = 100 points) covers materials from calculus I.
- Part III (10 questions 10 points = 100 points) covers materials from calculus II.

Placement in Math courses is as follows:
- If a student fails part I, he\she will have to take the remedial course College Algebra (MAT 100) with the condition that he\she would pass the course with at least a “B” to be admitted in the faculty of Applied Sciences.

- If a student passes part I and fails part II, he\she will have to take the remedial course Calculus I (MAT 101).

- If a student passes part II and fails part III, he\she will have to take the remedial course Calculus II (MAT 102).

- If a student passes part III, he\she will be exempted from remedial math courses and goes directly in Calculus III (MAT 203).

The passing grade on part I, II, or III is 60 points (6/10 questions).

Freshman Students Math Placement

Students applying for Freshman Arts or Sciences need to take the Math for Business Placement Exam only if they wish to join a major in the faculty of Business administration or faculty of applied Sciences. If they apply for the faculty of Arts and Humanities, no Math placement exam is needed.

The Remedial Courses in Math

1) For the Faculty of Applied Sciences

AUT offers 3 remedial courses:

College Algebra (MAT 100) (4 credits): Students are placed in this course if students fail Part I of the Math for Science Placement Exam. This course covers topics from Algebra. It is taught two hours a day, 2 days a week. Credits do not count towards major but are counted for the GPA of all students.

Calculus I (MAT 101) (3 credits): Students are placed in this course if they pass Part I but fail Part II of the Math for Science Placement Exam. This course covers the first main branch of calculus (Differential Calculus and its Application). It is taught one hour and a half a day, 2 days a week. Credits do not count towards major for Sophomore students but are counted for the GPA of all students.

Calculus II (MAT 102) (3 credits): Students are placed in this course if they pass Parts I and II but fail Part III of the Math for Science Placement Exam. This course covers the second main branch of calculus (Integral Calculus and its Application). It is taught one hour and a half a day, 2 days a week. .Credits do not count towards major for Sophomore students but are counted for the GPA of all students.
