The “Homage to
Hariri” exhibition presently showing in a gallery space in
Building 169, Saifi Village, Beirut, is an AUT
initiative and came about through Dr Imad Salamey contacting the
ARTS Department to find out if they wished to participate in
public events coinciding with the Beirut Marathon to honor the
assassinated ex-Prime Minister of Lebanon. Arts came up with the
idea of an exhibition of large scale paintings on canvas, which
were digitally produced using manipulated images processed
through computer software. After meeting with the organizing
Committee AUT
was given full access to Hariri image files at Future Newspaper
which became the basis for the paintings. Students and staff
plundered the files and finally came up with 23 paintings using
images and text to produce a visually powerful and moving
exhibition and expression of Rafic Hariri’s life and impact on
the country he died for.The exhibition was opened on Tuesday 12
April by his sister M.P Bahia Hariri.
Rafic Hariri
(1944-2005) was a philanthropist and self-made man who built his
businesses single-handedly on the basis of his reputation as an
honest, credible and trustworthy partner in all his endeavors.
Hariri believed that trust is the most important asset that
guides people, personal and business relations alike. He was
also renowned for his efficiency and dedication to his work and
to every cause he championed. For more than a decade as Prime
Minister of Lebanon, Hariri presided over the physical and
economic reconstruction of Lebanon, a country torn by war. No
such work has ever been accomplished under such a limited time
frame and conditions. The late Rafic Hariri was assassinated on
February 14, 2005 when explosives were detonated as his
motorcade drove past the Saint George Hotel in Beirut.
AUT
Arts thanks Future Newspaper for giving them access to images
from their archives. And a special thanks to the Hariri
Foundation, without whose support this exhibition, would not
have been possible.
