The person receiving higher education at the University is viewed as an active participant learner rather than a reactive, passive student. As such, the university embraces the active cooperative learning model of higher education that fosters positive interdependence, individual accountability, group processing, and social skills, such as leadership, negotiation, assertiveness, and general interpersonal skills.

 

 Why Active Cooperative Learning Model?

In addition to harmonizing our teaching methodology with our view of our learners and our mission statement at large, we employ the ACL model as it has been shown in a variety of studies to positively influence a host of important cognitive and non-cognitive variables, as an alternative means to lecture-based classroom

Cognitive Variables

  • Promotes higher achievement as measured by GPA
  • Far more superior student retention of concepts
  • Promotes higher order thinking strategies
  • Stimulates divergent and creative thinking in students
  • Greater in-depth understanding
  • Oral summarizing and student-to-student explanations consolidate and strengthen what is known
  • Promotes active learning, a natural endowment specific to human nature (I hear I forget; I see I remember; I do I learn)

Non-Cognitive Variables
  • Promotes higher student self esteem
  • Promotes positive interpersonal relationships
  • Teaches responsibility and commitment to a group
  • Enhances a more positive attitude towards subject taught and the instructor
  • Teaches active listening & tolerance to difference
  • Shared leadership and conflict resolution
